Change is inevitable. Even small changes are capable of improving the efficacy of system and bringing about a revolution. I have jotted down issues which keep banging my head and some measures to handle the issue in hand.

1. Gender Discrimination / Bias 

Discriminating between a male and a female child is such a shameful act and should be discontinued from our modern Indian society. The discrimination which starts with treating a male child differently (with greater affection and care) than the female child has also taken the shape of criminal offence such as female foeticide which can be considered as a murder. Though female foeticide is a punishable offence in India and worldwide, still many cases keep taking place especially in the rural areas.

Measures – What can be done?

• Education is the key. Educated parents are less like to entertain gender discrimination than uneducated parents.
• Awareness campaigns on TV and radio can help spread the message.

2. Drunk Driving 

Alcohol has the capability to intoxicate the vital areas of the brain resulting in poor judgement and poor performance of activities such as walking and driving. Thousands of people die in road accidents due to drunken driving every year.

Measures -What can be done?

• Awareness campaigns on radio and television discouraging driving after consuming alcohol.
• Tie ups of radio taxi with pubs to provide transport to ensure their guests reach home safely after drinking.

3. Sexual Harassment of Women

Sexual harassment of women has become quite common in the metropolitan cities such as Delhi these days. Many recent cases of assault against women have come up in the past weeks. Stringent laws need to be put in place to punish those involved in the crime putting the punishment as a lesson before the offenders and so that no one else dares to commit such crimes in future.

Measures – What can be done?

• Stringent laws such as capital punishment for rape cases.
• Heavy fines on those indulging in sexual harassment at public places.

4. Divide between India and Bharat 

We live in the largest democracy in the world which is yet a unity of two areas – rural bharat and modern urban India. The much developed urban India is undergoing tremendous development of infrastructure in the form of schools, colleges, hospitals, well-connected roads, good supply of water and electricity. The under developed rural bharat lacks modern amenities and infrastructural development. Efforts should be taken to shrink this divide and make both ends meet for a better India.

Measures – What should be done?

• Electrification of rural areas.
• Setting up international care level hospitals in rural areas.
• Development of roads and roadways linking rural and urban India.

5. Illiteracy 

Education is the real treasure. There is a need to improve the literacy rate of our country to place India as a better developed country on the world map.  Educated mothers means educated families, which would ensure better health conditions and better development of young India.

Measures – What can be done?

• Initiatives by NGOs to educate each mother.
• Setting up of more schools and colleges for all age groups all over India.

A lot can be done if each of the issues cited above and the measures proposed are taken to ensure a small revolutionary change in our present society.
